I never thought I would be picking Tulips on a farm in Alabama. I’ve seen the Tulip fields in Washington State, but in Alabama, it’s something new. We visited the Hubert Family Farms in New Market, just north of Huntsville on grand opening day in March. Maybe we shouldn’t have visited during the grand opening because the field was jam-packed with visitors just waiting to get their hands on more than 200,000 beautiful flowers from pinks, reds and yellows to purple and white blooms.
A day pass is $5, or a season pass is $15, which is a good deal if you plan to visit for other events throughout the year.
Once you park, grab a basket and start picking.
I had a hard time deciding which colors I wanted so I picked a sample of yellow, red, pink and purple. I think the purple tulips were my favorite. Our collection lasted about two weeks at home, but do take the advice on the website to bring a bucket with water. The tulips tend to wilt without water not long after picking. I tried to pick so I would get the entire root bulb, but some were so stubborn I could only get the stem. Don’t worry, it’s okay to get the bulbs. Once my blooms were spent, I cut the stems from the bulbs and planted them in my garden. We will just have to wait to see if they sprout new flowers.
Once you have picked all the flowers you want the staff will wrap them in brown paper for you to take home. You can pick all you want, but the $2.50 per flower adds up quickly, but I have to say, it’s well worth it. Not only do you get beautiful, fresh flowers but we had fun with the family strolling the rows and taking in the sights of the farm. We even took our fur baby Scarlet and boy did she enjoy roaming in the roads with her dad while mom picked flowers. She was so tired she had to take a nap.
Vendors were on site the day we visited with offerings of tea, popcorn, ice cream and other items. Just check the website for a list of vendors on the day you plan to attend. One important thing to remember is that if you don’t like port-a-potties, you may want to stop along the main road to use the restroom.
The family farm also sells produce in the summer and is growing sunflowers for a maze this summer. It is open to visitors for picking events Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon – 5 p.m. Please check their website before your trip to make sure they are open.

Great day trip!
